Southern-Style Hamburger Steak

Here’s a classic Southern-style Hamburger Steak—comfort food at its best 🤎

Ingredients (serves 3–4)

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1½ lb ground beef (80/20 is ideal)
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup crushed saltine crackers or breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter (for frying)

Onion Gravy

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: splash of Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Make the patties
    In a bowl, mix ground beef, milk, crackers, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
    Form into oval or round patties (like thick steaks).
  2. Brown the hamburger steaks
    Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
    Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Cook the onions
    In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook until soft and golden (5–7 minutes).
  4. Make the gravy
    Sprinkle flour over onions, stir, and cook 1 minute.
    Slowly whisk in beef broth. Simmer until thickened. Season to taste.
  5. Finish together
    Return hamburger steaks to the skillet.
    Spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer on low for 10–15 minutes until tender.

How to serve (very Southern 😄)

  • Over mashed potatoes
  • With rice or egg noodles
  • Add green beans, collard greens, or corn on the side

Tips & Variations

  • Extra juicy: Don’t overmix the meat
  • Richer gravy: Use half broth, half milk
  • Mushroom gravy: Add sliced mushrooms with the onions
  • Baked version: After browning, bake in gravy at 350°F (175°C) for 25 minutes
